Manchester United have been told to donate the funds made from Mason Greenwood's controversial sale to women's charities.
United could bank up to £27million after the forward signed for French giants Marseille, who've paid an initial £24m for his services in a permanent deal. Greenwood, 22, last played for United in January 2022 before he was arrested and subsequently suspended by the club.
The following February, Greenwood had charges of attempted rape, engaging in controlling and coercive behaviour, and assault occasioning actual bodily harm - all of which he denied - dropped by the Crown Prosecution Service. United then conducted a six-month internal investigation and in September 2023 sent the one-time England international on loan to Spanish side Getafe.
Greenwood impressed during his stint in Spain, attracting interest from multiple clubs across Europe. On Thursday, Marseille won the race for his signature, with United inserting a 50 per sell-on clause which could bring them more profit in the future.
For now, domestic abuser campaigner David Challen has demanded that United donate their profit to women's charities. Speaking to the i, Challen explained: "Manchester United is a massive global sports club that rakes in hundreds of millions a year.
"And that they didn't release a player - which they could have done quite easily - and chose to retain him for their own financial needs, really prioritises the financial needs of the company above women... It just doesn't seem like the club cares, even on a basic level, about women and girls."
He went on to claim regarding United's internal investigation last year, during which they considered restoring Greenwood to their first team: "They didn't even engage with women's charities until the 11th hour, the fact they can't donate to one of those charities or maybe a charity in the local area, it's woeful, especially for a club of United's size.
"Services nationally are crippled and need funding, even in the local area. It's staggering but unfortunately, it's not surprising, because they had the chance to release him but they didn't."
United released a brief statement confirming Greenwood's departure, adding: "We wish Mason all the best in his future career." The 22-year-old spoke at a press conference on Friday but was reluctant to discuss the allegations.
"I understand the questions, I don't want to talk about it too much or get into debates and controversies," Greenwood said. "I already spoke about it on Thursday with the supporters and I spoke about it last season. I want to move forward, I want to be part of OM.
"My intention is really to concentrate on the football part. The staff and players told me about the foundation, associations and hospital visits and like the other players I will participate in these initiatives.
"This season I will try to play well for Marseille, at the Velodrome in front of fantastic fans. I have been waiting for this for a while and I can't wait to play in front of this crowd. For the moment I am focused on what I have to do with my club."
