Algeria captain Riyad Mahrez has expressed his delight following the national team’s emphatic 5-1 victory over Mozambique in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.

The result strengthened Algeria’s position in the qualification campaign, with Mahrez applauding both his teammates and the unwavering support of the home fans.

Speaking after the match, the experienced winger acknowledged the importance of securing a convincing win.

"We had to win this home game against a good team. We played seriously, on a high-quality pitch, and we delivered a great performance, scoring several goals. We are very happy with this victory," he said.

Praise for the fans and playing conditions

Mahrez was particularly impressed by the electric atmosphere created by the Algerian supporters, who filled the stands in full voice.

He expressed gratitude for their continued backing, emphasizing how crucial their presence is for the team's success.

"The atmosphere created by our supporters was exceptional. We've played here before, but this time it was even better. Even the pitch was in much better condition. The fans supported us in difficult times. We always need them because without their support, we can't achieve anything. I thank all the Algerian people for what they do, and I'm proud to be Algerian," he added.

Algeria's strong attacking display was highlighted by Mohamed Amine Amoura, who delivered a stunning performance with a hat-trick and an assist.

Mahrez did not hesitate to commend his teammate's contributions.

Recognizing Amoura's talent

"We know Amoura and his qualities well, and we always try to make the most of them. He's very fast and plays deep. Each player has their own characteristics, and we try to complement each other on the pitch," Mahrez said, acknowledging the young forward's impact.

Amoura's clinical finishing and movement provided Algeria with an extra attacking edge, further reinforcing the depth within the squad.

Mahrez stressed the importance of squad rotation and the collective strength of the team.

"Everyone played well. Some shone in the first match against Botswana but didn't play today. The main thing is that no matter who plays, they always bring something to the team," he remarked.

With two wins in their qualification campaign, Algeria remains focused on securing a spot at the 2026 World Cup.

The team's depth, combined with the leadership of Mahrez and the emergence of talents like Amoura, provides optimism for the road ahead.
