Alan Shearer showed off a series of painful injuries he received after falling off his bike on Friday.

In a number of gory snaps shared to Instagram, the Newcastle legend blamed pot holes for the multiple cuts scattering his leg and arm.

'Ouch. Pot holes on the bike are not good!' Shearer shared succinctly along with the images on social media site Instagram.

Although the pictures appeared painful, the England icon might have avoided far worse injuries with none of the cuts seeming too deep.

Nine years ago Shearer found himself in far more dangerous circumstances cycling when a fall saw him forced to undergo major surgery.

The Premier League all-time record goalscorer had been biking in Quinta do Lago, Portugal when he suffered the accident, fracturing his wrist in the process.

Shearer was later forced to have a plate inserted into the broken wrist after returning home from his holiday.

The former striker will hope that his injuries do not impede his plans for England's friendly tie against Uruguay on Friday evening.

The BBC pundit previously aired his theory on why Trent Alexander-Arnold had not received a call-up as part of Thomas Tuchel's 35-man squad for the final international break before the World Cup.

In discussion with Gary Lineker, Shearer had floated the possibility that, to save the squad dynamic, Tuchel had sought to forcibly separate Real Madrid team-mates Jude Bellingham and Alexander-Arnold.

'Let me chuck this at you, Jude Bellingham and Trent are a pretty powerful couple,' Shearer raised to Lineker.

'Would there be a point in Tuchel's mind where he thinks that if those two are together I'm not going to play either of them, or may play one of them - one or the other - that then they have an influence on the squad?'

Lineker, who claimed England's hopes of World Cup glory will be lessened without Alexander-Arnold, suggested it would be a 'bizarre' reason for Tuchel to leave out the full back.

'What I will say is, what he might be thinking is he left Bellingham out of the previous squad, maybe to send a message, maybe he's leaving Trent out just to send another message. But we're getting quite close to the competition now,' Lineker said.

'I don't know. I don't know if they are problematical people to have in your side.

'What I do know is they are two unbelievably talented and brilliant footballers that have delivered over recent seasons.

'It's impossible for us to know what the connection or lack of connection is between Tuchel and those players, what he thinks.'
