Chelsea hero reveals plans to become a manager and follow Lampard's footsteps

Former Chelsea star Joe Cole has revealed that he would like to follow in Frank Lampard's footsteps by becoming a manager.

Cole has mainly worked as a pundit for TNT Sports since retiring from playing but is now considering other options.

The ex-England international previously worked with Brentford's academy and would welcome a venture into first-team management in the future.

Cole told talkSPORT: 'Yeah, absolutely. I'm coaching a little bit. I was at Brentford last year with the young lads, just keeping my eye in and coaching.

'I'm going to start again soon when things settle down. It's something I've got my eye on at some point. It's difficult, though.

'You don't want to take a job that you don't think is right for you at the time. There's lots of decent jobs, but you want a good job with an opportunity to do well.'

'Listen, I won't be putting my CV in Real Madrid any time soon. You've got to start somewhere and there's different ways to do it.'

Lampard is currently coaching Coventry City after a varied managerial career so far which has included two spells at Chelsea as well as stints at Derby and Everton.

Cole admitted the management is a 'mad world' and stressed that he would require a certain level of control if he was to start working in the dugout.

Cole said: 'It's such a mad world. I've got friends coaching all over and you speak to them, they're always four or five games away from the sack at any level.

'Then there's interference from the owners and directors of football, all these other things now where so much of what you control on the football pitch isn't in your hands.

'What job would you take on where they'd want you to do a job but you aren't really in control of it and you're going to get judged every Saturday?

'It's a mad job to do. The only thing I'd say is if I did a job, I'd like to have an opportunity and like to think I have full control of tactics and a bit of a relationship with the owner so you have time to work with things. If that was the case, I'd do it tomorrow. But I don't know if I'm waiting for something that's not possible.'

Meanwhile, another of Cole's former team-mates John Terry was previously assistant to Dean Smith at Aston Villa and is now working with Chelsea's academy.

However, Terry has now decided against pursuing a managerial career.

Terry told The Sun: 'I'm done in terms of coaching. I'm enjoying my life, I'm working in the Chelsea academy.

'I went for a couple of jobs and those days are gone for me. I'm enjoying my life a little bit, I've got my time to myself, I play a bit of golf, I'm in the academy and I have some family time as well.

'I absolutely wanted it. When I went into Villa I got great experience under Dean Smith and we got promotion, which was incredible.

'As an assistant coach in the Premier League and the experience I've had as a player and an individual captain in both Chelsea and England, I thought that would be enough to get me a job.

'I'm not saying a job in the Premier League or the Championship - but a job at League One level.

'I didn't even get a sniff. I had interviews and it was just 'you have no experience'.

'When I see some people managing today, it baffles me, it really does.

'In terms of 'am I frustrated', yes, absolutely because I have a lot of good attributes to be a really good coach or a really good manager but, unfortunately, that's not happened.'
