Liverpool were beaten 1-0 by Galatasaray in the Champions League on Tuesday night, and ex-Man City star Ilkay Gundogan revealed that one of his opponents was taken aback by the atmosphere
Daniel Sturridge was left stunned after Ilkay Gundogan revealed that a Liverpool player admitted to him they were taken aback by the intimidating atmosphere against Galatasaray. The Merseyside outfit suffered a 1-0 defeat at RAMS Park in Istanbul in the Champions League on Tuesday night, with Victor Osimhen netting the winner from the penalty spot.
Liverpool went into the game having lost their first match of the season away at Crystal Palace in the Premier League on Saturday. Arne Slot's side have now lost for the first time in the Champions League this term, having won in dramatic fashion against Atletico Madrid last month.
Slot's men will now prepare to face Chelsea in the Premier League this Saturday as they look to recover from back-to-back defeats.
Meanwhile, Gundogan, a former Manchester City player and current star for Galatasaray, has explained how one unnamed Liverpool player made a claim about the atmosphere during the match in Turkey, reports the Liverpool Echo.
"This club is not just special to me but I feel like it's special to so many, the size and potential is incredible," said Gundogan.
"If you were here tonight and seen the atmosphere... actually, one of my opponents came to me in the game and asked me if the atmosphere is always incredible like that, during the game, yeah.
"You can see even for them it was incredible to play in front of that crowd. It's something when you get that connection and the performance mirrors the people in the stand, you can get these special nights."
Sturridge was on media duty for Amazon Prime for the clash between Liverpool and Galatasaray, with the former striker looking perplexed at the comments made by Gundogan.
Presenter Gabby Logan asked Sturridge for the reason behind his puzzled expression. "I mean, I'm surprised. I didn't expect a player to ask someone that," said Sturridge.
"Do whatever you want to do, whatever vibe you're on. Anfield has a great atmosphere on Champions League nights, this was special don't get me wrong but just lock in man.
"Asking players questions about the atmosphere in the game is surprising but just stay locked in."
