Chelsea 2-0 Roma: Bompastor's side go top after routine Champions League win

Chelsea moved to the top of the Women's Champions League standings with a 2-0 win over Roma at Plough Lane on Wednesday.

Ellie Carpenter and Kadeisha Buchanan got on the scoresheet in the second half, giving Chelsea a one-point cushion at the summit, ahead of Barcelona's clash with HB Koge on Thursday, while Bayern Munich and Real Madrid played out a 2-2 draw at Uhlsport Park.

The Blues almost broke the deadlock inside eight minutes as Alyssa Thompson surged into Roma's penalty area and let fly a fierce shot that Rachele Baldi could only palm up in the air and onto the crossbar.

Sonia Bompastor's side dominated, with Thompson posing a constant threat off the right wing, while Lauren James stung Baldi's palms with a powerful drive, before Aggie Beever-Jones was thwarted by Shukurat Oladipo's spectacular last-ditch challenge.

Beever-Jones tried to make amends moments later, cleverly nodding James' pass into the path of Wieke Kaptein, who could only lift her shot high over the bar.

Bompastor made some big changes at the break, notably replacing Thompson and James, though it paid dividends almost immediately.

Carpenter burst into the box six minutes after the restart and met Kaptein's cut-back with a well-directed shot that just about squeezed under Baldi.

After Maya Doms blazed a rare Roma shot over the bar, Chelsea went close at the other end but spurned a series of opportunities with Melvine Malard and Sjoeke Nusken rifling over the bar.

Roma's best chance for a leveller arrived in the 80th minute when Alayah Pilgrim cut onto her right foot to dance past Lucy Bronze, but she powered her shot over.

And Chelsea wrapped up the win as Kaptein's cross off a short corner was met with aplomb by Buchanan, who nodded into an open net to secure three points.

Chelsea flex their muscles

Chelsea undoubtedly came into this clash as favourites, but even Bompastor may not have expected such a dominant performance from her side.

The Blues were relentless in attack, and save for that one chance for Pilgrim, they hardly let anything through in defence.

Indeed, Chelsea have kept a clean sheet in each of their last four Champions League matches – a run of 424 minutes without conceding.

In the final third, they were equally impressive, rattling off 16 shots – their highest total in a single Champions League match this season.

Those efforts totalled an impressive 1.78 expected goals (xG), while Roma, who are still searching for their first European win of the season, could only produce 0.30 xG in response.

Chelsea are now unbeaten across their six Champions League games against Italian sides (W4 D1), keeping a clean sheet in four of those matches, including each of their last two.

Roma, meanwhile, have failed to score in three straight Champions League games for the first time in their history in the competition.
