Copenhagen coach ready for Barcelona test: “A truly great player”

FC Copenhagen head to Camp Nou on Wednesday knowing that they need a result against Barcelona to keep their Champions League journey alive.

Heading into the final round of league phase fixtures, the Danish champions are outside the top 24 qualification places on goal difference. With five teams tied on eight points, Copenhagen need at least a draw in Barcelona to progress to the next round.

Copenhagen’s 37-year-old coach Jacob Neestrup has achieved a lot in his young coaching career but getting a result on Wednesday would rank among his biggest moments. Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Neestrup outlined what his team needs to do if they are to advance.

“We know where we are and what we have to do. We’re not afraid of the challenge. We’ve already played against tough opponents, like Bayern,” he explained.

“It’s well known that one of the things that makes this sport great is that it always gives you a chance. Clearly, we have to play a perfect game.”

Barcelona’s “truly great player”

Barcelona’s squad features many world-class attacking players. The likes of Robert Lewandowski, Raphinha and Marcus Rashford can all evade even the sternest of defenses, but it is the 18-year-old Lamine Yamal who presents the biggest obstacle for Neestrup.

“We’re dealing with a truly great player. Many coaches have tried to stop him, and it’s been impossible. Our main objective is to play as a team at our best. But it’s clear we have a plan in mind.”

He continued: “We don’t mind having to defend. We know Barça has great attackers. We’re talking about a top team.”

Barcelona go into Wednesday’s game knowing that even a victory may not be enough to secure a top-eight finish in the league phase. They are one of eight teams locked on 13 points, battling for a place in the eight automatic qualification places.
