Derby in advanced talks with Saudi investor over potential takeover

The Telegraph Sport has revealed that Derby County has entered into advanced discussions with Saudi sports investor Turki Alalshikh regarding a potential investment.

The Championship club is seeking further funds to enhance its transfer capabilities and is awaiting approval from relevant regulatory bodies for this partnership.

Alalshikh is a prominent Saudi government official with significant influence in boxing, and there were reports last year of his interest in investing in Bristol City.

He currently serves as Chairman of the Saudi General Entertainment Authority and is a Royal Court Advisor with the rank of minister.

According to The Telegraph, the 44-year-old has discussed capital injection with Derby County owner David Clowes. Currently, the Independent Football Regulator is conducting various reviews, and once approved, Clowes can proceed with and finalize the deal.

The Independent Football Regulator was established in July 2025 to maintain and promote the healthy and sustainable development of English football, and this investment is seen as a significant test since its inception.

In the summer of 2022, local businessman Clowes saved the club from liquidation. Since then, he has approached several domestic and international investors, hoping to introduce funds to help the team establish itself and improve its competitiveness in the Championship.

It is understood that Clowes was previously willing to sell up to 80% of shares to legitimate investors, but if the deal goes through, he would remain as the club's chairman.

At this stage, Alalshikh's specific investment plan is unclear, but he has experience in football investment, having managed several clubs in Spain and Egypt.

Clowes, a lifelong Derby County fan, spent approximately £55 million to rescue the club from administration when he completed the acquisition in June 2022.

The team is currently managed by legend John Eustace, finishing eighth in the Championship this season, four points shy of the promotion play-off spots. On Monday, Derby County did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
