Man Utd backed Ruben Amorim in the summer transfer window but there is still work to do.

Manchester United director of football Jason Wilcox is confident the club have a 'clear plan' to achieve success under head coach Ruben Amorim.

The Portuguese boss was backed with over £200 million in the summer transfer window to refresh his first-team squad and buy players who were better suited to his precise tactical approach. There was not only a focus on signing talented stars, but also a demand to sign those with the right personality and desire to bring success back to Old Trafford.

United co-owner made it his mission to develop superstars rather than buy them readymade, while Amorim made it his preference to sign individuals who were already proven in the Premier League. After a tricky start to the new campaign, United are beginning to reap the rewards for their transfer approach, though Wilcox is well aware that there is still plenty of work to do before they can compete for the major honours again.

Wilcox reveals what United are looking for from next signings

Manchester United plan to back Ruben Amorim in the transfer market again next year, with a midfield refresh their next priority position. United will target at least two central midfielders, with at least one of those expected to be a marquee addition to the first-team squad.

United could also be in the market for another goalkeeper and a winger, while they will also look to raise funds by selling those who are deemed surplus to requirements. Work is already underway to identify transfer targets for next summer and Jason Wilcox has emphasised the club will only move for players with the right character.

“We have got a clear plan," he told official club media. "We know what we have got to do, we know the areas of the team that we have got to improve. For us to get in the top four and consistently challenge for Champions League places, win Champions League, win Premier League, we have got to invest in the squad. We have got to buy the right players. The right players who are talented but also who can deal with the pressure, who can take the squad forward. It is not always about just signing elite talent, they have got to have the right character and be somebody who can bring something different to the team.

"We are really happy with where we are, we know we have got to improve and, you know, the players, they will never be satisfied, Ruben will never be happy, I will never be happy, it is just how we are built. We are always looking to improve. Anybody who works at Manchester United should be thinking the same and they do, with the standards we are driving every day.”
