Martinez: It's easy to blame the coach, but I expected more from management this summer

After Manchester United defender Lisandro Martinez's team suffered a 0-2 away defeat to Atletico Madrid in the second round of the Champions League, he spoke to Amazon Prime Video.

"Lisandro, that's a tough result. How would you sum up the team's performance today?"

"Very poor. I have to control my emotions, but this match is like a mirror, reflecting the true state of our club right now. We had a very good season last year, and we expected the management to do more – to bring in stronger players during the summer window to increase competition, because many other teams have made significant signings. Atletico showed today that they are a very strong team, and they fully deserved this victory. Our current squad is still not at Champions League level."

"Regarding Manchester United, you mean you expected the club to invest more financially in the squad this summer, right?"

"Yes, 100%. I had higher expectations for our technical director. We have to face reality; as players, we also need to do more on the field, but when you want to build a strong squad for these crucial European nights, sufficient squad depth is equally important."

"Where specifically do you think reinforcements are needed – defense or attack? The club has clearly invested heavily in midfield this summer."

"Across the board, the whole team needs strengthening. Last season, we gave our all and built a good foundation for a top team, but now we must take action to prove ourselves. Coming here and not seeing my teammates show the fighting spirit and desire to win is really frustrating and disappointing."

"The head coach is under a lot of criticism and pressure. Do you think the root cause is that he didn't receive enough financial support from the board this summer?"

"I don't think so. I don't think the problem lies with the head coach; he's done his best. But every season is different; you can't rely on last season's success. Other teams study you, understand your tactics, and know everything about you. If you don't evolve and adapt, it becomes a major problem."

"In difficult times like this, the head coach often pays the price, but constantly changing coaches doesn't solve problems. What are your thoughts on other areas of club management?"

"I... I can't say anything more."

"Understood. We appreciate your honesty tonight. With only 2 wins in the last 9 games..."

"In moments like tonight, it's easy to blame the coach and criticize the players on the pitch, but management and other levels also have to take responsibility."
