Merino scores his first World Cup goal as substitute in round of 16 match

In the 2026 FIFA World Cup Round of 16 match between Spain and Portugal, Merino came off the bench in the second half to score his first FIFA World Cup goal.

In this match against Portugal, Merino scored in the 85th minute, giving Spain a 1-0 lead.

In the 91st minute, Merino scored from a Ferran Torres assist. This was the 30-year-old Merino's first goal in his fifth FIFA World Cup appearance.

It was also his second goal in a major international tournament for the national team. The Spanish midfielder had previously scored one goal in seven appearances in the European Championship.
