Napoli skipper Giovanni Di Lorenzo has taken full responsibility for his side’s Champions League loss to Manchester City.
The 32-year-old picked up a straight red card after just 21 minutes for bringing down City talisman Erling Haaland just outside of the box with a rash tackle.
Reduced to ten-men, Antonio Conte’s side conceded two second half goals at the Etihad on Thursday (September 18), losing their first Champions League game of the season 2-0.
Di Lorenzo has since taken to social media to send a message to the fans, accepting responsibility for the defeat.
“As captain, I take responsibility,” his statement reads, “I’m sorry for having complicated our return to the Champions League.”
“I’m proud of my teammates who fought until the very last minute,” he continued, “We have another seven matches where I’m sure we will show our worth. Forza Napoli.”
