In the group stage of the Canada-Mexico FIFA World Cup, Germany vs. Curaçao, 40-year-old veteran Neuer started the match, making his 20th appearance in the FIFA World Cup.

Neuer had made 19 appearances in the 2010, 2014, 2018, and 2022 FIFA World Cups. After his 20th appearance, Neuer equaled French legendary goalkeeper Lloris, becoming one of the goalkeepers with the most FIFA World Cup appearances in history.

Considering this is only Germany's first match in this FIFA World Cup, if all goes as expected, Neuer will surpass Lloris and further extend the record.

Neuer made 6 appearances in the 2010 FIFA World Cup (the third and fourth place goalkeeper was Butt), 7 appearances in the 2014 FIFA World Cup with 4 clean sheets, winning the championship and the Golden Glove award. In the 2018 and 2022 FIFA World Cups, Neuer made 3 appearances each, and Germany was eliminated in the group stage.
