Pique aims brutal dig at old rival Alvaro Arbeloa as he displays cheeky banner

Gerard Pique has taken his latest dig at former El Clasico rival - and Spain team-mate - Alvaro Arbeloa with a banner in Madrid reading: 'We're not that well-known', followed by: 'But we will be.'

The duo's rivalry dates back to the golden era of El Clasicos, when Pep Guardiola and Jose Mourinho were the managers of Barcelona and Madrid respectively.

In 2015, after the pair had clashed in multiple matches between Barcelona and Real Madrid, Pique fired a thinly-veiled insult at the defender by saying: 'Arbeloa calls himself my friend, but he's just an acquaintance... cono...cido.'

By repeating the word and pausing midway through it, Pique appeared to break the Spanish term for 'acquaintance' (conocido) in half, leaving two separate words that can both be interpreted as insults.

It was reignited earlier this season when Pique brutal jibe on WhatsApp after Arbeloa, who is the new Real Madrid manager, endured a nightmare first match in charge.

Madrid, who gave Arbeloa the reins after sacking Xabi Alonso, were dumped out of the Copa del Rey by second-tier strugglers Albacete in a shock 3-2 defeat. Pique didn't let his rival live it down, and has now seemingly taken the opportunity to poke fun again with the banner.

Eager to pile in on Real Madrid's misery after the loss in Arbeloa's first game, Pique sent a message to a private WhatsApp group shortly after the defeat, which jokingly read: 'Good debut, 3-2.'

The WhatsApp message was sent to the presidents of Pique's Kings League, a seven-a-side football tournament established by the World Cup winner in 2022, and leaked during a live broadcast by Andorran YouTuber Spursito, according to Spanish outlet Marca.

Arbeloa, who played for Spain 38 times alongside Pique, was once quoted saying: 'I would not go to lunch with Pique'.

After seeing the banner, the duo's former Spain team-mate Iker Casillas, who also played for Madrid alongside Arbeloa, said: 'You have to be, you have to be...'

It is reported by Spanish publication AS, however, that the ex-goalkeeper, who now works with Pique in the Kings League, knew of the banner's design before it was put up.

Casillas, via Marca, said to Pique: 'How you love to stir things up.'

Pique claimed innocence, replying: 'I swear, they gave it to me today to pass. I passed it, but I didn't have a f***ing clue.'

Pique founded the Kings League, which is a seven-a-side football tournament that has been created alongside social media influences, personalities and streamers.

The banner, shared by the Kings League on social media, was made to advertise the Kings League, but has been interpreted as a dig at Arbeloa and his side - with the first set of words separated from the rest and in white and black - Madrid's traditional colours.
