The Toffees are now in eighth, while Liverpool's defeat means Liam Rosenior's side are a point behind them in sixth.
Leeds and Brentford finished the day with a 0-0 stalemate at Elland Road.
On Sunday, the standout fixture of the weekend did not disappoint. Newcastle took an early lead against their neighbours Sunderland through Anthony Gordon, before Chemsdine Talbi pulled the scores level three minutes before the hour mark.
Brian Brobbey then popped up in the 90th minute to snatch victory, sending the small corner of away fans wild at St James' Park.
Aston Villa bounced back from three consecutive defeats to secure a 2-0 win over West Ham, consigning Nuno Espirito Santo's men to another week in the relegation zone.
Nottingham Forest then put three past Tottenham in a dramatic bottom-of-the-table clash, leaving Spurs just one point above the Hammers in the drop zone and interim manager Igor Tudor on the brink.
