Man Utd signed goalkeeper Senne Lammens on deadline day for £18.2million, with the Belgium Under-21 star vowing to be "a rock behind the defece" for Ruben Amorim's side ahead of his debut for the Red Devils
Manchester United's new goalkeeper Senne Lammens has vowed to be “a rock” at the back for Ruben Amorim's side. United signed Belgium Under-21 keeper Lammens for an initial £18.2million on deadline day following early-season blunders from Altay Bayindir and Andre Onana.
Lammens is viewed by United as their long-term future No.1 between the posts and the 23-year-old said he can bring calm and stability to Amorm's unreliable and leaky defence.
“I think if you want to be a good goalkeeper, you have to be a rock behind the defence,” said Lammens. “They have to trust you and count on you in difficult moments. That is something I take pride in. Of course, I can improve in this because the next level is bigger, but it is one of my attributes that I am proud of and I try to improve.
“My parents are also really calm and collected, but [I also developed this mentality] from growing up, when I was in the youth team and I thought about the goalkeeper I wanted to become later in life.
“I think one of the best attributes you can have as a goalkeeper is staying calm under pressure, in any circumstances, even if you make a mistake or something. You just move on and try to give your best to the team.”
Lammens also opened up on the process he goes through before and after every game, and the methods he employs to stay cool under pressure. ”Before and after the game, I just write key words down and my thoughts a little bit,” said United's newest recruit.
“Sometimes, if you don't do that, it can be a lot going through your mind. It helps me with staying calm and staying in the moment a little bit, and not overreacting in situations.
"I write key words, trigger points. Maybe you're playing a team who put a lot of pressure on and then you know you don't have to think a lot during the games, so mentally you're already ready, already prepared for the game and what it's going to be like. So, when the game comes, you're not going to be so surprised by it. I think that's important.”
The arrival of Lammens has cast doubt on the futures of Bayindir and Onana, with one of them set to leave for a club in Turkey or Saudi Arabia, to bring balance to Amorim's goalkeeper options.
As well as Lammens, Bayindir and Onana, Amorim also has veteran keeper Tom Heaton as part of his squad, with one needing to depart before the transfer windows close elsewhere.
