Smith: White could be considering a move; Gyokeres is a pure centre forward

Arsenal star Alan Martin Smith has said in an interview that Ben White could be considering a move due to not being Arteta's first choice at right-back.

On the current status of Ben White

After joining from Brighton for £50 million in 2021, Ben White was a key member of Arteta's side during his first three seasons at the Emirates. Ben White made 133 appearances for Arsenal during that time, first shining in partnership with Gabriel at centre-back before switching to right-back to make way for Saliba.

A combination of injuries and intra-squad rivalry saw Ben White make just 17 Premier League appearances last season, and the 28-year-old has continued to see limited playing time this season, making just three starts. Arsenal signed Timbell from Ajax in 2023 and the Dutch international is now Arteta's first choice at right-back.

Alan Martin-Smith said, "When you have such a strong squad there are always going to be players who don't get consistent playing time and some of them will be thinking 'maybe it's time to go' and the club don't want to lose them but it's hard to keep everyone happy.

"It all depends on how Ben White himself sees the current situation. He may want to get the playing time he deserves in a certain team, but Arsenal are also on the up at the moment. We'll have to wait and see on that, it's obviously down to personal choice, but at the moment Timbell is more favoured.

"Ben White has really been plagued by injuries, but he had developed a very good understanding with Saka, which is something that perhaps Timberlake hasn't quite achieved."

On Gyokeres and the comeback of Havertz

Smith said, "I think maybe in certain games Arteta will go for Havertz depending on the opposition and the characteristics of his defence. Havertz is a real talent and obviously offers a different profile to Gyokeres, who is purely a striker, so Havertz will get playing time and it's a good rotation option.

"But as far as Gyokeres is concerned, I'm a fan of his. He doesn't look like the typical Arsenal striker template of recent years. His playing style is quite direct and decisive. He's physically strong and has excellent short-range bursts. I think he's a good addition and has a bright future ahead of him. I'm sure he'll pick up his fair share of goals. Maybe on a technical level, he's not yet at the level of some attacking players. But he brings qualities that the club didn't have before. So the fans should keep their faith."
