For thirty years, whether Simeone was wearing the jersey as a player or now sitting on the coach's bench, Atletico Madrid has remained unbeaten at home against German teams, including Bayern Munich. Bayern has yet to secure a victory at Atletico's home ground: they lost both times they visited the now-demolished Vicente Calderón Stadium, and only managed a 1-1 draw on their sole visit to the Metropolitano Stadium.

Atletico's last home loss to a German team dates back to October 16, 1996, in a Champions League group stage match, when they fell 0-1 to Borussia Dortmund, with Stefan Reuter scoring the winning goal. That was the season after Atletico won their historic double, with Radomir Antić leading the team to the Champions League quarterfinals.
Historically, only two German teams have won at Atletico's home ground, but both victories occurred in the 1970s. Eintracht Frankfurt won 2-1 there in 1975; Dynamo Dresden also defeated Atletico 2-1 in 1979.
Since then, all visiting German teams have failed to conquer Atletico's home ground, with a total of 27 matches played without a single victory. Bayern also failed to break this curse. Among the Bundesliga giants, only Bayern has managed a draw at the Metropolitano Stadium. The match took place on December 1, 2020, behind closed doors due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
In that match, João Félix scored first for Atletico, and Thomas Müller equalized for Bayern. In that Champions League group stage game, Atletico was under more pressure to earn points than Bayern, and the final score was 1-1.
Atletico and Bayern met twice more at the Vicente Calderón Stadium, also in the Champions League, with Atletico winning both matches 1-0. On May 20, 2016, in the first leg of the Champions League semifinals, Saúl dribbled past several defenders to score a spectacular goal, which proved crucial for the outcome of the first leg. Although Atletico lost 1-2 in Munich in the second leg, they still advanced to the Champions League final thanks to the value of that goal.
In the very next season, the two teams met again in the Champions League group stage, and Atletico again won 1-0, with Carrasco being the goal scorer. Since these two victories against Bayern, two players who were on the team then are still there today: Oblak and Koke. They, like their predecessors who fought for the Rojiblancos, remain indispensable core members of the team.
