On June 28th, in the third round of the FIFA World Cup group stage, DR Congo defeated Uzbekistan 3-1 and advanced to face England in the knockout stage. Wissa scored twice and stated after the match that the team deserved to play against England and would enjoy the match.

We deserve to be on the field, playing against England, a top team. Everyone knows that our country is going through difficult times, with ongoing conflict in eastern Congo. Every time we wear this jersey, we think of our compatriots back home. So tonight, we gave it our all, just to tell everyone: no matter how difficult the road ahead is, we must persevere."
